Sell your house with your garden in 5 simple steps
When you’re trying to sell your house, the garden can make just as a powerful impression as the interior - so ensure you don’t neglect it! From a fresh coat of paint to tidying cupboards, we've all heard the tips for how to address the inside of your home when you’re trying to sell, but we rarely hear about the outside and this lets a lot of people, and their properties, down.
Our expert estate agents at Chimneypots have extensive experience showing and selling houses. Check out their top 5 tips for how to improve your outside space and give yourself the best chance of swapping your for sale sign for a sold one.
1) Tidy up your garden
Just like inside your home, your garden needs to be tidy and free of clutter so potential buyers aren’t confronted with your belongings – this helps them visualise their own possessions in the space. Also, ensure flower beds, pots and hanging baskets are free from weeds and other debris.
2) Style your garden to match your audience
Think carefully about who is likely to buy your property and dress your garden to reflect the activities they are likely to do there. For example, if you have a family house, try adding a play area and family dining space, or if your home is likely to appeal to young professionals, why not add an outside bar or BBQ area?
3) Add more colour to your flowerbeds
Adding a rainbow of coloured flowers, shrubs and bushes to your garden will make the space look bright and welcoming. We recommend planting plenty of yellow, blue, green and purple coloured plants as they’re said to boost happiness and create a friendly, peaceful environment.
4) Create an outdoor living space
Transform your garden into an extra room for your house with garden furniture, whether it’s a large picnic bench or a cosy bistro table with a couple of chairs. Make sure the furniture is clean and cobweb free and positioned in a logical way. For instance, if you have patio doors leading out from your kitchen, place your table nearby to create an al-fresco dining area.
5) Maximise space to sell your house
Try to make your garden as big as possible. If you have a small courtyard, try adding a mirror onto a wall to give the impression of space, or if you have hedgerows creeping onto your lawn, cut them back to create more room.
